Orchestra Makes Its Music "Felt" - Literally

The BBC National Orchestra of Wales has created a "sound box" as part of a systematic effort to open up its performances to the deaf community. The sound box transmits music through vibrations, and audience members can touch it with their hands or even lie on top of it, as this story from NPR's "Weekends on All Things Considered" details. The Orchestra also uses large video screens that display a visual representation of the concert and places audience members among the musicians so that they can feel the instruments as they are played.
